Carroll Shelby : Passion for the Automobile

After failing as an airplane pilot, in road transport, in oil exploitation, and even in chicken farming, Carroll Shelby decides to give up everything to devote himself to his true passion: motorsport.

It was in 1952, when he was 29 years old, that he took his first steps in car racing, during a drag race. 6 years later, after having driven the vehicles of the biggest brands of his time and winning numerous races, he launched into Formula 1. In 1959, it was the consecration for the driver from Texas: he won the 24h of Le Mans, at the wheel of the official Aston Martin DBR1/300! Unfortunately, in 1961, his racing career ended due to heart problems.

But the passion for automobiles still burns deep inside him, and he tries to develop an American sports car that is less expensive than the overpriced machines of the Italian competition. His ambition gave birth to the Shelby Cobra 260 in 1962. In 1965, following a request from Ford, he developed the Shelby GT 350 based on the Mustang, in order to gain a place in the highly competitive Muscle Car sector. . He continued to work in the automobile manufacturing industry and on charitable missions, notably after creating the Carroll Shelby Foundation (CSF), until he passed away in 2012.
